Who does not know small books 10x10 cm size? Pixi-Books are awards, bedtime reading, content for advent calendars or birthday gifts, and sought-after collectibles. For many children, Pixi is the first book they pick up. With over 3,000 different titles since its inception and around 14 million books sold each year, Pixi is the largest picture book series of all time.
Pixi first book, titled Miezekatzen, was published in Germany in 1954, and Pixi will be 70 years old in 2024. Danish publisher Per Jald Carlsen wanted to offer high-quality picture books as cheaply as possible through his publishing house, founded in Hamburg in the early 1950s. His goal was to popularize reading: every child should have a book and be able to enjoy reading. He chose a format of 10x10 cm and 24 pages, and named it after the English word "pixie".
In order to appeal to as many children as possible, Pixi were and are offered not only in bookstores, but also in many other places — mostly with the characteristic Pixi gnome figure with a bowl full of books. Books also represent the art of telling and illustrating interesting stories in a small format.
The character – a small gnome with a pointed hat, green overalls and red boots – was created by illustrator Eva Wenzel-Bürger. Dorothea Toust gave Pixi its current design in 2003. Pixi has always been recognizable for 70 years. The content and forms of presentation changed and reflected social changes. But Per Jald Carlsen's goal is as relevant today as it was 70 years ago: every child should have access to and enjoy books.
